Yes you can but a small number of of us do it as it can be a lot of work. It's much easier to have the experts at the fix store do it for us, particularly if you are going for a custom look in the spirit of Chip Foose cars, or undertaking a classic restoration attempt.
In these budget conscious times, you may be tempted to replace those tatty seats yourself. It does not expense a lot of money and could be just what your truck requirements. You may not do as good a job as the professionals but it'll probably still look better than the old ones. Go and pick a little fabric. The type you chose will rely upon your personal taste and your sewing skills. Velvet might be an excellent choice as it is quite forgiving of the beginner sewer. It is also comfortable to sit on and quite durable although it has to be said, it doesn't mix well with wet weather or dogs! Also, this is a poor selection of material if you're trying to do a re-establishment to factory state... it's simply not a material that was used. Obviously, if you are doing something fancier, and want a look similar to what you can get on TV (Chip Foose cars again), this material could be included easily enough.
Whatever material you chose will have to be cut and sewn to size. One method of doing this is to take apart the current covering and using this as a pattern. It is not ideal as you may transfer stretching and other irregularities to the new coverings but it may be the only way you can manage to do it.
If this all looks like too much work, you could consider just adding new seat covers. Nearly all vehicle models are provided for as it is vital that you choose the correct shape and fit. Otherwise they'll look dreadful. The custom seat covers will take account of the shape of the seat, the head rests and the seat controls. They're a very cost effective way to improve the appearance of your auto although if you are renovating a very old model auto you may not be able to find a custom fit.
Keep in mind though, many the answer to this question revolves around what your ultimate aims and targets are. If all you are trying to do is replace something ripped or torn... that's fairly easy, or can be. On the other hand, if you are looking to create something that could compete with Chip Foose cars in the looks department, you would probably be better served working with a specialist.
